Philip Carey

I have worked in financial services since 1987, running my own business Careys Personal Credit and also as chief executive of a local friendly society called Tees Mutual.

Over that period I have developed skills in business planning, accounting and in corporate governance. I hold a DipPFS (Diploma in Financial Planning).

I was a panel member of the Financial Conduct Authority’s Small Business Practitioner’s Panel and I am currently chair of the Consumer Credit Association UK.

I have experience of school governance as I was on the Governing Body of a primary school in Middlesbrough until my children left the school.

Kay Steven

Chair of Governors since June 2016, Vice Chair prior to that. I have been a governor for over 8 years. Professionally I was a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Manchester working at Central Manchester Heathcare Trust and The Christie Hospitals. I have a BSc (Hons) in Biology with Psychology; The Two part Primary and Special IBMS Exams which qualify me as a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. I undertook the NEBMS Certificate in Supervisory Management and whilst in Manchester I was a Director in a property company and was Convenor for the Local branch of the National Association of Cytologists. Since 2005 I have concentrated on voluntary work on Teesside, firstly with the NCT and then within school, and education related charities. CPD and training courses are regularly attended and I have just spent a year following the NGA Chairs course.

As Chair and Vice Chair I have been closely involved in the recruitment of both The HT and Deputy HT, and have worked closely with them and the SLT to bring about the rapid and impressive improvements we now see at Hartburn.

Chris Herron

With over 20 years experience in the Commercial Property sector I am a Director of Herron Associates Ltd which I formed in 2010 to provide client focused, innovative and realistic solutions to all aspects of the property sector.

We provide wide ranging advice to clients with current instructions covering commercial agency, property management (standalone properties and multi-let portfolios) and Landlord & Tenant matters. Over recent years we have become increasingly involved in residential development work acting for both Plc house builders and regional clients in relation to Land and Property acquisitions/disposals.

Prior to that I was a Co-Director of a General Practice Surveying firm and have held various posts with other regional property companies covering wide ranging instructions and disciplines throughout the UK.

Hannah Herron

Finance director

I qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant in 2007 and subsequently as a CGMA which is the global designation for Management Accountants. Having worked both in the private and public sector in accountancy roles for over 20 years I have a wide ranging understanding of finance issues and procedures that will be invaluable in making correct commercial and sound financial decisions for the Academy. In my current role as Finance Manager for NHS England (Cumbria and the North East), I solely manage budgets in excess of £140 million including contracts in General Practice, Dental, Pharmacy and Optometry.

This requires the ability to clearly communicate, and implement, complex financial strategies to stakeholders without comprising the efficiency of the organisation.

Julia Armstrong

CEO / Head of School Improvement

CEO of the Trust I have previously served as Head teacher at Hartburn Primary School, I have lead many school improvement initiatives over my twenty five year career. Prior to my current position, I was a non-teaching Deputy Head teacher of an outstanding stand-alone Academy of five hundred pupils in Middlesbrough. I was a strategic lead in the implementation and conversion to academy status in 2014. Upon my appointment to Hartburn in Sept 2015 rapid school improvement was necessary. Sharing my vision with key stakeholders, I worked closely with other senior leaders and governors to rapidly improve provision. Our results at Hartburn over the past two years have improved dramatically, we are delighted to be 3rd in Teesside in the Gazette best schools guide.

Margaret Colley

Advisory Head of School Improvement

A registered teacher and accredited Primary School Improvement Partner, with considerable experience across the primary phase in education, training, service improvement and leadership development. I retired from Middlesbrough Council as Head of Achievement in August 2017 and I am currently doing some project work for the teaching school alliances in the town as well as other projects for individual schools. I continue to do some consultancy work for the council relating to a funded school improvement project and as moderation manager for KS2 writing. As Head of Achievement I was accountable to the Director of Education for the direction of the education agenda in Middlesbrough. My key role was to challenge underperformance and support effective strategies for improvement, provide challenge and support for all our schools to ensure that all pupils attended a good or better school and achieved at least in line with National outcomes. I was strategic manager for the Governor Development Service, the Looked after Children Service, The Advisory Service including the NLT regional hub manager and the Ethnic Minority Achievement Service. I have developed courses and led training for a full range of personnel from Head Teachers to teaching assistants with a focus on raising standards and developing leaders. I have also had experience of working with PGCE students and working with adults who have English as a second language. I have worked as an LA consultant for the national strategies and have led numerous sessions on national training events. I am currently a foundation governor at both Ayresome and Sacred Heart Primary schools in Middlesbrough.

Jamie Hughes

HR Management

I have been a civil servant for 17 years working for Dept. for Work and Pensions where my experience includes recruitment, social justice, socio-economic climate and policy writing. As a governor over the last 10 years I have experience in dealing a range of issues including Headteacher performance, recruitment and redundancies.

Erica Avison

HR Director

I am a Chartered Member of the CIPD and have a BA (hons) in Human Resource Management. I have worked in HR for 12 years and have worked in the Private and Public sector and ran my own Consultancy. I currently work in HR for North Yorkshire Police where my role includes advising on complex employee relations cases, coaching and mentoring line managers, change management, workforce planning and delivering training.

Hadyn Beckwith

I completed twenty two years of service as a weapon engineer in the Royal Navy, reaching the rate of Warrant Officer second class. During this time I was the deputy head of department of the navy’s largest warship. Leaving the Navy, I spent the next couple of years with several different jobs including a help desk operator, network administrator and warranty technician before becoming a lecturer initially for Tees Achieve and then at Redcar and Cleveland College until my retirement in 2017. I am also a churchwarden at St Peter’s Church in Wolviston.

The Prince Regent Trust has overall responsibility for:

  • Holding the various Trust Leaders to account for ensuring all Prince Regent Trust schools improve to become at least good or achieving outstanding, in order to ensure that the very best is achieved for all children
  • Supporting and challenging head teachers and Local Governing Bodies in relation to their delegated roles and responsibilities
  • Holding the Trust to account in relation to its wider responsibilities, and in particular in relation to school and Trust compliance in relation to statutory and legislative requirements

In order to achieve this Prince Regent Trust needs to know its’ schools well, including individual strengths and priorities for development, and in response to this provide support and challenge, for individual schools, proportionate to the assessment of need.

In response to this, the Prince Regent Trust will play a key role in:

  • Carrying out a regular review of data for all trust schools and ensuring swift action in relation to any areas of concern
  • Overseeing the outcomes of recent Ofsted Inspections or interim assessments
  • Working with individual schools to identify/ agree risks or priorities for development and monitoring the impact of the action taken
  • Identifying and agreeing relevant support and intervention for individual schools requiring ‘school-to-school support’ and ensuring appropriate support and challenge in order to bring about rapid improvement
  • Working with individual schools with short term challenges or in areas which put them at risk
  • Agreeing and providing CPD and Leadership Development opportunities in line with national priorities or the collective priorities of Prince Regent Trust schools
